If I was stranded and on an island and I only had access to three main ingredients I’d chose: water, food, and vitamins (and I mean all of em!). I have a healthy obsession with everything health, wellness, and holistic related. A new supplement? I'm on it. A cool essential oil? Ordered. This is my thought process when I’m on-the-hunt for cool ways to maintain my health and stay at my best. As an aficionado, I’m giving my experiences and personal vitamin regimen to give you the real on what I take daily. and what has helped me maintain a level of optimal health.

Multi-Vitamin for Men

The core vitamin I started with. Having multi-vitamins in your routine is important but this is where I started and boy, have we come a long way. Before beginning an official routine I would always think about vitamins. I could never get myself to stay-on-top of my intake. At one point, I figured taking one multivitamin would hold me accountable and allow me to get what I needed. Comprised of Vitamin's A, C, D, E, K, Iron, Chromium, Zinc, and Copper. Multivitamins' are a great way to ensure you're getting a majority of vitamins into your diet.

Biotin

Biotin was one of the first vitamins I was curious about. Also known as Vitamin H, my decision to intake Biotin was due-to-my desire to look and feel great. I have a beard and wanted to maintain healthy hair and nail growth. After almost a year of taking Biotin daily, my experience has been positive. I’ve noticed a difference with my skin, hair, and nails. I’ve noticed that my hair has gotten longer along with my beard growing in. Also, as a former nail biter, my nails have grown quicker and look way better than they ever have.

B-12

One of the most essential vitamins for someone like me: Booked & busy. I'm a self-proclaimed busy body with rarely any room for downtime. I pack a lot into my day and have been guilty of overbooking myself. A few years ago I found myself getting worn out. At the time I was juggling school, work, and a separate social calendar. I would get home late and wake up early, leaving me feeling restless. As a result, I did a bit of research and discovered that B-12 was a supplement that could give me more energy. Two years in and I haven't looked back since. B-12 makes a difference throughout my day. It also supports my mood level, red blood cell support, and protects the brain from loss of neurons.

Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle and I go way back. Milk Thistle is a herbal supplement geared toward protecting the liver. I started to take it during my sophomore year of college when I would indulge in partying. I wanted to ensure that my liver is being supported given the level of fun I was having when I was out-of-class. Milk Thistle is a supplement that targets the liver by keeping negative toxins away. It aids illnesses such as liver cancer, alcoholism, and even protects bone and skin health.

Vitamin D

Let’s face it, it’s essential and I lacked it. Being from Los Angeles, I always got in a strong intake of sun. I moved to San Francisco three years ago. Living here has forced me to rely on supplements due-to-the city being gloomier than I'm used to. I began taking Vitamin D around a year and a half ago. I felt that every time I would go to the doctor Vitamin D would be my greatest deficiency. Aiding with strong bones and a healthier mood level, I was been able to maintain my bone health and melanin. Vitamin D also fights the disease and symptoms of depression.

Maca Root

I’ve always had a love for Maca. For those who aren't aware of what Maca is, it's a radish root powder from Peru. Maca is filled with an extreme amount of antioxidants. Including core vitamins such as fiber, calcium, iron, and amino acids. It’s also known for boosting and elevating your longterm mood. It can take a night in any direction and always leaves me feeling energized and fulfilled. I alternate between pill and powder and I particularly enjoy putting it in my smoothies.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is an essential supplement. Coming from fatty fish tissue fish oil contains Omega 3's. While I consume a healthy amount of fish per week, I felt I needed to add fish oil to ensure I was getting the appropriate amount of omegas. I knew when I began taking fish oil that my heart and brain needed to be the most protected aspect of my body. I began researching Fish Oil and later added it to my regimen four months ago. Taking fish oil has allowed me to maintain my blood pressure and keep the heart cleared. Fish oil also supports eye support, healthy skin, and symptoms of depression.

Olive Leaf

Olive Leaf promotes anything and everything antiviral, antibacterial, anti-cancerous and anti-inflammatory properties. I added Olive Leaf into my regimen around three months ago given concerns of the flu season peaking. Including it into my routine has made me feel more protected against sickness. Especially given the critical timing of the coronavirus pandemic. It's also helpful for those who work out daily. Decreasing the chances of heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Oil Of Oregano

One of the leaders of anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties in the vitamin community. Oil of Oregano helps with digestion, gut health, and bacterial infections. I take it to regular healthy digestion levels and complete immunity.

Vitamin C

One of the most consumed vitamins used to protect and give immunity. Most people aren't aware but Vitamin C can lower the chance of gout. Gout is an intense joint pain that is a result of poor diet and genetics. While my family doesn't have a specific history of gout, it affects a large population of Black men. As a preventative measure, I take Vitamin C to receive more bone support and maintain iron levels. My intake is healthy for a young man and has given me much needed peace-of-mind.

Ashwagandha

For those unaware, Ashwagandha is an ancient medicinal herb. Dating back 3,000 years, it transforms the way I process stress, anxiety, depression. It even regulates muscle mass and strength levels. A huge benefit is a fact that it increases fertility in men and boots testosterone. I began taking ashwagandha in tea form. While I enjoy the loose-leaf, the pill form is more concentrated and easier for me to throw into my diet.

Melatonin

One of the keys to better sleep. At a point where my anxiety continued to worsen, I knew I needed to do something to get my sleep schedule back on track. I began taking melatonin and in the beginning, I experienced odd and vivid dreams. The vivid dreams are still present but I've gotten more restful sleep than ever before. This would be due to melatonin effects on the brain during REM sleep.

There we have it. This is the full list of the vitamins I take daily. Most people would assume it's a lot but I do want to state that this is what works for me and my diet. I enjoy blogging about my personal experiences. Yet, I am not encouraging anyone to try these at once. If you’re thinking about trying any of these supplements out, I would encourage consulting with a doctor or nutritionist first. What works for others may not work for you and it's important to find things that work for you and your life.

Happy Supplement Searching

and may you stay healthy & happy!
